Research Description: This lab is interested in the evolutionary changes to plant development that resulted in the diversification of plant form. We combine comparative morphology as a tool for diversity assessment with molecular genetics to understand the regulation of development. Our studies focus on the Papaveraceae sensu lato, a plant family at the very base of the large eudicot lineage of angiosperms. Leaf shape, and particularly leaf dissection patterns are impressively diverse in the poppy family. Currently, we study the roles of KNOX, FLORICAULA, and YABBY genes in the California Poppy Eschscholzia californica. A second focus of research is the link between inflorescence determinacy and flower symmetry in the Fumariaceae, the sister family of the Papaveraceae sensu stricto. Comparative developmental, expression, and functional studies are used to assess the role and interplay of FRUITFULL, FLORICAULA, TERMINAL FLOWER 1, and CYCLOIDEA genes in this group.
