Research Description: I am a veterinarian and a member of the vibrant Molecular Genetics and Evolutionary Group (MGEG) at the Faculty of Science (Department of Zoology) together with the Institute of Environment and Natural Resources, have experience in using molecular biology and serological techniques needed for sampling and genetics/disease investigations in the great lakes region for conservation and disease control. we have worked on the population genetics, phylogeography and evolution of a number of large African mammals ranging from the elephant to the antelope. This expertise has grown to an international level that is now genetically characterizing major animal epidemics with particular emphasis on Foot-and-Mouth disease aimed at unraveling livestock-wildlife disease interactions to design efficient disease control strategies. The group has attracted funding from local and international development partners including DANIDA, EU-FP7, Sida and many more. Charles is actively involved in developing local research capacity capable of using state-of-the art technology in evolution, conservation, diagnosis and research in the epidemiology of important viral diseases of domestic animals and wildlife, and research in the evolutionary interplay of viruses and their hosts.
