Research Description: I am investigating the adaptive potential of the long-lived alpine key species Salix herbacea for persistence under changing climatic conditions. In this sense, I am evaluating if differences in the timing of snow melt impose restrictions for gene flow between populations in different microhabitats. In addition, I am exploring the genetic basis of local adaptation with a particular focus on freezing tolerance, carbon storage regulation, flowering time determination and seed establishment success. This study will ultimately make inferences on the extent of local adaptation and the ability of populations to respond to environmental change
