Research Description: My group is interested in a variety of topics related to the vertebrate craniofacial (head) development and craniofacial developmental evolution. We use molecular, cellular and developmental genetics approaches to study the precise mechanisms of cranial skeletal differentiation, especially in the context of the dermal intramembranous bone, which is unique to the skull and bones. We also curious about issues of skull morphogenesis and integration of cranial skeleton with cranial musculature. The species we work with range from the laboratory “model” systems, such as chicken embryos and mouse mutants, to the “non-model” species used for evolutionary developmental studies, for example Darwin’s Finches and their tribe relatives, other birds and, more recently, reptiles.
